Balham: Where to Eat and Drink

A table filled with plates of food to represent places to eat and drink in Balham

Balham may be well-known as a lively area that attracts young professionals and families alike, but it doesn’t have a great reputation for culinary excellence. This is a little unfair. After all, Balham has some great independent restaurants. Of course, there are plenty of chain eateries, too. For example, there is a Pizza Express on Bedford Hill, a McDonald’s on Balham High Road and a Nando’s a few doors down. The result? You are never far from somewhere convenient to eat. However, Balham has plenty more to offer than chain outlets, especially if you like a drink when dining out.

Gastropubs in Balham

Among the best pubs in the area is The Cyclist. This place gets most things right with seasonally sourced food and local ingredient suppliers. The Sunday lunch menu here is particularly worth checking out but you’ll probably need to book ahead. The wine menu is strong, too, with plenty of Spanish, French and New Zealand options on offer.

The Regent is located a short walk from the tube station on Chestnut Grove. This place is lively and there are screens showing sports events, so it won’t suit all diners. That said, the lovely garden here is perfect for al fresco dining. The Canteen Kitchen serves until 9 pm but the garden itself needs to be vacated by 10 pm. The Regent has a good cellar, too.

Situated on Bedford Hill, The Bedford is a big community pub with plenty going on. There is live music most weekends plus comedy shows and other events. The dining here includes a great brunch menu as well as a separate menu for evening diners. It is also a good place for cocktails, both of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties.

Funky Places to Drink in the Area

If you are not a pub person, then eating and drinking is still on the cards in Balham. A good example is the Lost and Found Bar at the north end of Bedford Hill. This place has a vintage vibe and a huge drinks menu with plenty of gins available. Yes, you can book a table for bar food, as well. Typically, this will consist of pizza and shared platters.

Those who are looking for a little more sophistication with their night out should also check out The Exhibit. It has an open plan feel to the interior décor and a cool bar area to enjoy a tipple or two. This place has become very established in Balham over the course of the last two decades. Two-for-one cocktails are available early in the week. As well as some delightful cocktails, you can order food including the bar’s so-called bottomless brunch.

Finally, it is worth mentioning Heidi. This is a true wine bar that serves some wonderful Champagne cocktails. Perfect for a romantic night out, Heidi has an extensive drinks menu, to say the least. Seafood lovers will also be in for a treat thanks to its prawn, crab and octopus dishes.
